The saddle mounted ballista allow the use of ballistic weapon for hooved races like the Equines, by attaching it on to the side of a saddle. The traditional, older generation of saddle ballista require magic to activate the weapon. Newer models have improved mechanism that allow use by non-magic users.

In battles, it is typical to use a team of two operating the saddle ballista: One to load the ballista bolts and the other to carry and fire the ballista. Magic user eliminated the need of a team of two ponies in battle.
